Quick writing update

Finished a 2600-word story inspired by the Japanese Snow Woman fairy tale. I seem to be on a fairy tale/folktale kick.

Speaking of which, my African-flavored folktale is currently up on Critters. It's received six crits so far, most of which are quite positive. Hurray.

I'm also working on a non-fiction article for girlsonfilm. Should have that wrapped up soon.

I got an email from the Editor of Leading Edge letting me know to look for my contributors copies and payment for "Second Daughter" next week. Hopped to their website and saw that issue #44 is indeed out. It's dated Dec. 2002, so I wonder how long it's been off the presses. Doesn't matter, I get to see my name in print again and hold the check in my hot little hands next week. Woohoo!

Here's the cover art:

In sort of mixed news, I got an email from the Writers of the Future contest. I've been watching the responses flow into the Speculations Rumor Mill Acceptance/Rejection topic from the 4th quarter of 2002 for the last couple weeks, chewing my fingernails and peering anxiously into my mailbox. I really had my hopes up for this one.

Sigh:

"Your manuscript was one of the semi-finalist entries, though it did not place in the final selections for the 4th quarter of the 2002 L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest (July 1st to September 30th).

Judges for the quarterly judging were Robert Silverberg, Jerry Pournelle, Larry Niven, Gregory Benford and K. D. Wentworth.

Arriving seperately in the mail is a letter from the coordinating judge, K. D. Wentworth. Also arriving at a later date is a certificate of merit for your work.

Meanwhile, we sincerely hope you will submit another entry for the next quarter."

( But hey, I just noticed they spelled "separately" wrong.)

So, I made it past the first round, but not into the money and publication round. Dagnabit. I'm torn between feeling quite despondent and pleased that it made it that far. Pook. This might call for some ice cream therapy.
